March 22, 2006 - (Portland, Ore.)--This is the season when political candidates in Oregon dust off their patter about the importance of schools to our children's future and the long-term economic prosperity of the state. If things go as usual, next spring the leaders we elect will be busy listing the reasons why we can't afford this essential state function.
